Volunteering with Doggies: Rewarding as Heck

This is the second Saturday in a row that I’ve spent at least part of the day volunteering for Milam Touch of Love. Today we were at an event at Tractor Supply in Rockdale, where we were invited to bring materials and dogs that are adoptable.

Our booth after the doggies arrived.

Since the event was in Rockdale, we invited the Rockdale Pound folks to bring some dogs. I got there first and set up the table, along with the really helpful manager at Tractor Supply. Our banner looked really good, and we made the whole setup look inviting.

More from Ledbetter Park

The Portacool is still holding up, and I’m dying from smelling barbecue on an empty stomach. I’m now the only staff, but since business is not brisk, it’s fine.

We did see a beautiful bug and I got a great photo of it on Meghan’s tattoo. Perhaps it’s Rugosana querci. Or not. But it’s beautiful and tiny.

This little fellow is about a quarter inch long.

A lot of our volunteers have dropped by, including Tom and Windy, who do the kitten rescue and fostering for the Cameron Touch of Love. They got these bright shirts so people can easily see them when they are rescuing cats from “interesting” places. We all love the color!

A little later

We were also visited by Mary Lou and Janiece, from Rockdale. Thanks to them, I got some lunch!

Mary Lou checks out the display.

Janiece is the Animal Control Officer for Rockdale. They have lots of dogs available, and not much space, so they’d be a great source of a new canine friend!

Janiece and I are full of love for MTOL.

Milam Touch of Love is also helping their pound out with their donations. Next we are trying to figure out how to open a shelter for the animals out in the county, who can’t be taken to the pound. Yes, I can’t adopt them ALL!

Public Service Announcement over!

And later…

My own family even came! And Kathleen donated. We decided to head out early, so we only have a half hour left.

Lee, Kathleen and Michael having fun.

That’s good, because the cooler is getting sad.

Live from the Shade…Here We Are

Well, we’re still here, and I’m not dying of heat stroke. I even am having some fun! I watched some kids fishing and enjoyed looking at fun geese and ducks.

The fishing area!

We’ve had exactly one visitor so far. But it was a good one! We got an invitation to go to the Blessing of the Animals at the Episcopal church in town. October is a nice time to do an outdoor activity. I’ll be out of town, but I know

We enjoyed talking to Casey, and we exchanged lots of business cards. He may be able to help us start a coffeehouse at the Hermit Haus, too!

But wait!

We had more visitors and got a membership! The wind is making a mess of our papers, but woo hoo, our cabana is holding up! Meghan and Michael and I would love more guests!

Perils of Sun Sensitivity

Live Blog!

Hey. Just a short post asking you all to think of me as I sit near fire ants until 4 pm. I’m doing yet another Milam Touch of Love event. I’m in charge so I can’t leave. And sun is my enemy! I got sunstroke in high school. Since then, ugh.

Meghan and Michael day hi.

Luckily one of our volunteers brought a porta-cool thing, which should help, and our canopy will help once the sun is higher. And I have ice. And a neck wrap.

Porta Cool!

The good news is we are near the coffee guy. And he’s open!

Coffee guy.

More later! Come by the Cameron FunFest and Barbecue Cookoff to see me.

Thrifting for Dollars: My Why

It’s really been a hard time in the country where I live, and it seems like we are heading more and more to divisiveness and violence. My goal is to do what I can to encourage us all to remember that we are also capable of love and caring, even for people different from ourselves. Let’s spread that, please? Okay, so how am I doing that?

Just a few of the people I enjoy volunteering with and who teach me a lot as I get to really know them.

Raising Funds at a Thrift Shop

Yep, that’s what I did yesterday and what I plan to do every first Saturday of the month for the foreseeable future. The Amazing Grace Thrift Shop in Buckholts has allowed our Milam Touch of Love animal support group to sell items in the front of the shop (they are offering this to other groups, too).

It was fun selling this stuff. And if the peace sign is still unsold, I’m getting it next time!

The kind people behind this really nice store (not kidding, it’s so clean and pretty and the staff is so respectful to all who shop there) are also animal lovers and very supportive of MTOL. And they not only donate the space to us, but have become donors. This is such a wonderful example of putting their Christian beliefs into action.

I love that our volunteer put animal stickers on the baked goods!

Our volunteers brought baked goods and some items to sell, but the shop also let us sell some jewelry and keep the funds. This made our fundraising team very happy! We ended up with well over $400 for the day, from combined sales, donations, and memberships. Plus, we got to talk to a lot of people about the organization, which you just can’t put a price tag on.

Why Do I Do This?

Here’s the thing. I also believe in putting my beliefs into practice. I want to do what I can to do good in the world, encourage peace, and share my convictions that everyone has something to teach me, if I take the time to listen.

When You HAVE to Go Somewhere Fun

For the past few years, I’ve missed business trips. I’m glad I joined Master Naturalists, so at least I have one conference to attend each year, but I always get so much out of seeing old friends and meeting new people that I miss the old days when I traveled more.

Here’s Edna Kelly, pre-exploring for us!

Thus, I was pretty stoked when I found out that a requirement of being a member of the Friends of La Leche League Board is to attend their organization’s trip to a fun place every other year (the other year, they meet at a conference for one of La Leche League’s local affiliates, usually Texas).

This year, we are going to New Orleans in November. This, of course, assumes the city will still be there after so much bad weather, but at least it’s after hurricane season. I’ve been rather amazed at exactly how much planning these trips take. There is so much to consider! They have to come up with fun things to do and good places to eat, without making the registration too costly. That is not easy. I am very impressed with the hard work and patience the trip planners, Carroll and Evy, have exhibited.
